Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the concerns or difficulties with Elastic Therapeutic Taping (Trouble Shooting)?

The skin needs to be free of oil, sweat or lotion prior to application
After application, rub down tape to activate heat sensitive glue
Avoid extreme stretching of tape during application to avoid skin irritation
Apply approximately 1 hour prior to activity or shower to allow glue to adhere properly
Skin irritation is rare, but special care should be taken with hypersensitive skin

How do I avoid skin irritation?

First apply a test strip (1 inch by 3 inches) to check for skin sensitivity
♦   Be sure skin is clean prior to taping
♦   Rest the skin a day or two and then try again
♦   If skin is irritated, try one of the following products prior to taping to create a protective interface
      * Tens CleanCote Skin Wipes

Maalox ® (dried on skin before application)

      *  Benedryl ® Gel (dried on skin before application)

♦   If irritation persists
Try using tape for a shorter period of time
If above still fails, discontinue use

How do I get tape to stick better?

Be sure skin is clean and free of oil, sweat and/or lotions
♦  In cases of profuse sweating or moist conditions use of an adhesive spray is helpful

Is there anything that can be used when a child has a tendency to develop a rash from the tape?

If the rash develops when a child is on an antibiotic or another new medication it is wise to discontinue tape usage until the child is healthy again
♦  If the rash is persistent, then putting a light layer of Benedryl gel or Maalox on the skin before applying the tape can be very effective in reducing the chance of the rash developing
♦  Make sure to let the gel or Maalox dry before applying the tape

I have tried the Benedryl®  Gel and Maalox, but my child still develops a rash. Is there anything else I can do?

Try using the tape for a shorter period of time. The tape can be effective if only on for a few hours.
♦
Be sure to inform the caregiver of when you would like the tape taken off
♦
Monitor how the skin is doing
